Fingerless Mitts Anyone?

So I started knitting with socks. I now have a million bazillion socks. I've also sort of lost my love for them, because I love a simple sock. I know how I like my toes, heels, and cuffs, and I hardly ever stray from that setup. I also find that I am limited on pattern due to texture issues. I don't like my feet to feel funny. All of this has led to fingerless mitts.

Fingerless mitts are like socks for your hands! The great part about them is the simplicity and the texture variety! I can put whatever I want into a fingerless mitt and it will never negatively affect my hands. This allows for greater creativity in lace and cable patterns! Woohoo!!! 

Without further ado I would like to introduce Puget Sound Mitts! My third fingerless mitts pattern. This pattern uses a complex cabling over a small portion of the mitts. It satisfies that cabling urge without it becoming super stressful!

Reminiscent of the tumultuous eddies and currents throughout the Puget Sound, these mitts represent the waters I live around and love. I designed these based off of the mesmerizing swirls in the Tacoma Narrows and through Deception Pass. The ups and downs of chronic nerve pain can be very tumultuous too. I feel the waters of the ominous eddies of the Puget Sound really resonate with the broiling turmoil just under my surface. Being on and near this water brings me so much peace.

I hope this pattern brings you peace too. In a time when everything in the word is stressful, and emotionally disjointed I think we can all use a small bit of peace to turn to. Enjoy the peace that only knitting can bring my lovelies!

Kitchener Graft Demystified and Simplified

That gosh darn Kitchener again! Always confusing, but it looks so good, we all want to do it!

When I first started knitting, I picked up socks pretty much immediately. I love the idea of making something functional that eventually wears out. They also have so many changes throughout it keeps the knitting interesting and fast. So let’s get to the nuts and bolts. 

Here is a little trick that I've picked up over the years. It will make grafting a dream! You'll never fear the join again! This video also has a way to speed up your grafting process, and before you know it you will be grafting while watching shows, talking, having coffee or tea with friends, while traveling...anywhere and anytime!

Birthdays Are The Best Days

Cat Bordhi

I cried for a bit when Cat Bordhi passed. She never taught me knitting, which is ironic as a sock knitter. She did, however, teach me of the friendliness of knitters.

It was a valentine's day. It was Madrona. I live 10 minutes away from this fiber festival so I go every year. The year I met Cat Bordhi I had no idea who she was. I had learned my knitting from June Hemmons Hiatt and the yarn harlot and I was excited to take spinning and dying again with Judith McKenzie and sweater design with Amy Herzog. I was an avid sock knitter as well. I always have a pair of socks on my needles.

It was a very unassuming chance encounter to be honest. I had just entered the building from the parking garage and there was no one around but me and this lady with her arms full. So I asked if she wanted help. It turned into this 10 minute conversation; laughing and commiserating about never having enough hands, and how friendly and great knitters are. I helped her into one of the classrooms, we introduced ourselves and then I departed thinking, "what a nice lady." As I was leaving there were all these excited knitters rushing in. That's when I learned I had just had a random, casual conversation with a legend.

I thought, in that momemt, how nice it must've been for her to have a normal conversation with a stranger that day. Because all day she is surrounded by people with stars in their eyes that just want autographs and to be in her presense. She brightened that day for me. I didn't know her and she didn't know me, but she took time to talk to me, and made me feel welcomed. That mattered more to me than her prestige. She treated me like an equal. I'll always remember that.

That short chance encounter has changed the way I interact with popular knitting teachers; legends so to speak. I treat them like people. Genuine, nice people. This is what they do for a living, and they are way more prolific than I am, but they are still just people. People looking for ways to connect.

So thank you Cat. I'll never forget your kindness.

Dr. Who Is Back Again

While I was visiting my lovely friend in New Castle I was inspired to get my geek on. Who says knitting can't be a little nerdy?! I've got some cute Dr. Who Tardis' for you today!

Snag Free Birthday Gift!

Hello blog land! My birthday was last Wednesday, so my DH took me to San Diego for a week! It gave me some time to recharge and unplug, but I'm back now and we've got new items rolling into the shop!

Wednesday Bits

Welcome to our Wednesday bits!!

It's the middle of the week so we thought we'd help you get through by sharing a few bits from the store.

Our lovely Maria is slightly injured at the moment so the stitch markers are in limited supply at the moment. However, be watching for some hand painted water color paintings. She's feeling a bit inspired at the moment.
